Prof. Gayle Greene

Insomniac's Slant on Sleep

Sunday, Sept. 7
11 a.m.

How does sleep deprivation affect the body and mind? Why do people suffer from insomnia? Illuminating that topic is Prof. Gayle Greene, who has been an insomniac since she can remember. She found that insomnia affects mainly women, the elderly, and the poor, yet these are the groups least studied. If researchers cast a wider net, they might find that excluded groups have insights that bear scientific investigation, and the mystery of sleep that's so long eluded them might yield some secrets.

Greene has written a new book, Insomniac, about this subject. Hear what she has to say. The book will be for sale and signing.

Prof. Greene, a professor of Literature and Women's Studies at Scripps College, Claremont, California, has written books on Shakespeare, feminist theory, and women writers. She also wrote The Woman Who Knew Too Much: Alice Stewart and the Secrets of Radiation, a biography of the pioneer radiation epidemiologist whose research turned up the links between fetal x-rays and childhood cancer. She's a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and a board member and the patient representative of the Academy's American Insomnia Association.
