Barry W. Lynn

Religion and Politics: Can They Coexist?

Sunday, April 6
11 a.m.

Unlike most Western democracies, the U.S. continues to see an infusion of religion into the political process. Candidates frequently speak about their personal religious beliefs, and some even use faith-based appeals to win support from certain blocs of voters. Many in the religious community work to pass laws based on their interpretation of Christianity.

The Rev. Barry W. Lynn will argue that as a legally secular republic that includes people of all faiths and none, the U.S. must refrain from basing its laws on religion. Lynn will explain why religious and secular nonprofit groups should respect federal laws that bar intervention in partisan politics.

The Rev. Barry W. Lynn serves as executive director of Americans United, a Washington, D.C. -based organization dedicated to the preservation of the Constitution's religious liberty provisions. He is a frequent commentator on radio and television. His most recent book is Piety & Politics: The Right Wing Assault on Religious Freedom and he is co-author of the forthcoming First Freedom. Copies of his book will be available for sale and signing.
